Synopsis
The time is WWI. British guerilla fighter Col. Duncan Grant (Brian Aherne) makes his way behind enemy lines to foil the Germans' plans to destroy those towns presently controlled by the Allied Expeditionary Forces. The Germans have planted a series of mines throughout the countryside, in a pattern resembling the letter "W" hence the film's title The W Plan. This booklet (A5, 16 pages, card covers) is a reprint of an article which originally appeared in "The English Review" in August, 1929. The Author, Graham Seton, was Lieut. Colonel Graham Seton Hutchison, author of "Warrior," "Footslogger," "Pilgrimage," etc. There are many examples in Great War literature of the devotion which officers' batmen showed towards the officers they cared for, and this is a very personal view of this kind of special relationship. In some ways, the officer/batman relationship was one example of the breaking down of class barriers which the war brought with it, although it has to be said that the relationship was still of the master/servant pattern. Nevertheless, it is unlikely, without the intervention of the war, that well set-up young men like Graham Seton would ever had much to do with the likes of young, orphaned Piper Peter McLintock of the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders who now sleeps, forever young, in Ration Farm Military Cemetery, la Chappelle-d'Armentieres, France.

Kenneth J Alford
Major Graham Seton-Hutchinson was the Mad Major, whose exploits during World War I won him
the Military Cross, a Distinguished Service Order, and the honor of having a march composed commemorating
his service by Kenneth J Alford. Kenneth J Alford was a pseudonym for Frederick Joseph
Rickets (1881-1945). He was the son of a coal merchant in London but studied both piano and organ
as a child. At 14 he enlisted in the First BN Royal Irish Regiment as a band boy playing cornet, violin,
and euphonium. He later completed his education and was appointed Bandmaster of the Second
Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Most of his marches were composed during the next
two decades in that appointment. Alford served in the military until his retirement in 1944.

C'est en effet la traduction littérale... Il semblerait que ce soit un héros de la Première Guerre Mondiale, la folie étant alors la témérité

Qu'il n'est pas conjectural, a priori.
